Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
This session is designed to help practicing teachers design or modify a curriculum using project-based and place-based learning approaches that make possible meaningful connections with students’ lives and with global communities beyond school walls. Guidance will be given for developing strategies, tools, and resources that engage students in exploring relevant, real world issues that specifically focus on the richness and diversity of global communities as the context for learning. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss challenges related to constructing global curriculum in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge related to their community. Focus will be on projects that are designed to help their students learn key academic content, practice 21st Century Skills (such as collaboration, communication & critical thinking), and create high-quality, authentic products & presentations. Practical tools for engaging students in thinking locally and globally will be demonstrated as a way to spark questions about the environment around their school and to generate ways of connecting their local issues with broader community and global contexts.
