Project: Global Inform

Hi Everyone!

Project: Global Inform is eagerly looking for teachers to run this project in their classrooms this school year. Project Global Inform (PGI) is an in-school project where students use media to spread awareness about human rights violations. PGI came out of the idea that we too often “teach” our students about genocide and human rights violations, but never “do” anything about it. This project’s main objective is to create awareness about current human rights violations in our schools, communities, and abroad. Through the use of media and technology students have the power to make a difference.

PGI can be implemented in any current curriculum and/or unit dealing with human rights, genocide, and peace education. PGI serves as the "assessment" for these units, where students experiences and awareness campaigns are the project. If you would like a copy of the 2, 4, or 6 week PGI unit plans let us know. You can learn more about PGI at http://project-inform.org/.

So far we have three different school signed up for this year, and we would like to reach a total of 10 if at all possible.

Thanks!

  • Project: Global Inform (PGI) is a peace education project that is experiential. You can obtain the six week curriculum/unit plans for PGI from our website but feel free to modify it to go along with your pre-existing curriculum.

The basic components of the project are as follows:

    - students are exposed to current human rights issues and violations through the use of media (Invisible Children, Love 146 videos etc) and literature (Human Rights Watch report, Amnesty International, or a novel such as Night).
    - students then choose groups based on which human rights issue they are most passionate about
    - each group researches the human rights violation's history, current state, political aspects, media coverage etc and develops an "Action Plan" (a template is included in the curriculum) for how to create awareness
    - the Action Plan lays the foundation for an "Awareness Campaign" in which students create at least one form of multimedia (video, website, etc) and use at least one form of social media (facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc) to inform their school, community, and world around them about each specific human rights issue
-at the end of their "Awareness Campaign" students will Collect Data (i.e. hits on website, views of a video, fans on facebook, followers on twitter, +2 Pledge, comments on blog etc) to measure in Week 6

    - Each team will write a 1-2 page report on their campaign’s successes and failures, what they did, why they did it, how it worked, what their impact was, and what they will do in the future about human rights.
    - Each team will create an accompanying short Presentation (video, slideshow, etc) about their awareness campaign and what they learned.
    - Final sharing and reflection.

Please let us know if you are interested in running PGI as a project in your school this year! Thanks!
