Short Session Description (one line):
Examining the impacts of "psychic distance" in the world market, and exploring how educators can use this phenomenon to enhance globalized outreach between classrooms.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
"Psychic distance" is a term that highlights the perception of "closeness" that certain markets feel towards their relationship with international markets, in part defined by similarities in language, culture, politics, and industrial development, and the impact this perception has on the success of future business interactions.
In our presentation, we will outline the available literature focusing on this phenomenon, and open the door for a collaborative discussion regarding methods of applying this theory to developing stronger globalized outreach in higher education. The open discussion will center on the following questions:
- How can we use psychic distance to help us address “perceived distance” to education, both within students’ own personal constructs as well as cultural norms and standards?
- How can we use this to help ensure positive connections across globalized classrooms? What lessons are there to be learned about fostering both a sense of “closeness” as well as sustaining motivation to keep working harder?
- What are the implications of this kind of connection/dissonance for educators and administrators who intend to create global connections?
