I am a 6th grade social studies teacher in the USA (Maine) looking for teachers who would consider collaborating on a unit centered around the elements of Digital Citizenship.  I have 4 classes of about 16-18 students for which I am seeking partner classes.  This would be my first attempt at doing something of this nature; was thinking a joint class wiki, bogging  and some skyping (open to ideas though!).  My school does block access to Twitter, Facebook and Nings....   Timeframe for starting would be second/third week of September.  Thanks for considering!

  • Hi Tricia,

I'm an Instructional Technology Specialist for St. Alcuin Montessori School in Dallas, TX. I will be working with 7th & 8th grade IB students and the first unit I will be addressing is Information Literacy covering some of the following:

    1. Find the publisher of a website
    2. Find the history of a website
    3. Is the information current?
    4. Navigating websites
    5. How to search for the information you are looking for
    6. How to use key words in a search, changing a question into a query.
    7. Understanding copyright and creative commons.

I'm not sure if this would fit into what you are teaching but I would love to work with another class outside of our school. Part of my project involves my students making a presentation to other class explaining Information Literacy.

Our students are issued laptops and must sign an AUP before they can receive a computer, so we discuss elements of Digital Citizenship the first week of school. We certainly could continue that dialogue with your class in September.

Let me know how you feel about these ideas. Thanks for putting this suggestion out there.

    • Margaret,

Thank you for your offer! I am in the process of putting together my timeline for the year. Due to the need to add in a unit which will provide the incoming 6th graders with a foundation of basics such as culture, geography, point of view, bias, etc. I am facing the possibility of moving back my Digital Citizenship Unit to October. Do you have any leeway where you can return to this topic and perhaps have your students "teach" mine via skype, blogging etc.? I would love for my students to see that there is relevance to this unit and they often respond well to peer influence. Let's try to work something out! Thanks! -Tricia
      • My timeline is totally flexible so I am sure we can work something out.

I've been checking out the curriculum online and the link below has some incredible lessons posted by MicroSoft. Take a look at these and maybe we could do something with one of those units.

I look forward to working with you this fall.

        • Margaret,

As school approaches I am attempting to finalize my timeline for the year! Digital Citizenship has been moved back to September-October :) I will need a couple of weeks to cover some concepts such as bias and point of view, then onto basics such as saving to the server and setting up e-mail. After that I am ready to go! Should be the second or third week of September. I have put together a wiki with some of the content and lessons that I used last year. If you e-mail me at isles29@gmail.com. I can send you an invite so that you can take a look. Thanks!
