Some stereotypes of high school students portray them as self-serving and egocentric. However, there are many high school students with a genuine desire to contribute to the world around them and help make the world a better place. For these service minded teens, service learning holds unique promise as an opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom in a volunteer situation. Service learning is a chance to “combine learning goals and community service in ways that can enhance both student growth and the common good” (Bandy, 2014). Volunteering in a foreign country gives students the chance to work directly with local citizens in another country.
Service learning allows high school students to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it in a hands on way while they work in a local community. Volunteering abroad provides special learning opportunities for high school students. Foreign language development and application is especially relevant when doing service learning abroad. Understanding the intricacies of life in another country is another benefit of service learning. Students who participate in global service learning opportunities learn patience, tolerance and acceptance of all kinds of people and lifestyles. Service learning can help high school students grow into open minded, well rounded, academically successful people who have a great deal to take back to their home communities and apply to benefit of others.
