Unfortunately the school that i teach in blocks the Skype site in such a way that we are unable to download it. Upon investigating....i was told that Skype is too risky and that 'predators/nasty folks' could potentially 'hack' into when kids are video-conf'ing and potentially do nasty things!
Is this true or absolute rubbish? I need rock hard evidence guys to take back to my school if I'm going to persuade them.

I've never heard of that, but you can change your settings so that only people in your contact list can contact you. We have many teachers that use Skype and that has never happened before.
These are the directions:
You can set Skype so that ONLY people in your contact list can reach you. Tools, options, and then choose either Privacy (for all features), or Calls, Chats etc. for individual settings for each.

You will definitely have to put the settings on private. I have used it in my classroom, however my school district is going to allow us to use Windows Live for safety reasons. I prefer Skype because more people are familiar with it.
