Learn to use Free and Open Source Software to make videos directly from presentation slides using text-to-speech.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Students and teachers can create Khan Academy-style instructional videos using SlideSpeech and the computer's voice to share cross-cultural lessons. Text-to-speech technology has advanced to "Avatar" (movie) quality and will continue to improve, so writing scripts for computer voices could become a new kind of digital literacy. [Listen to the examples in the URL section below and judge for yourself.]

You can leverage this text-to-speech technology in education and learning by writing, or having students write, scripts for the computer to speak (no video camera or microphone required).  It is possible to create an entertaining or educational movie at Xtranormal in this way, but it is even better if the content can be played on mobile devices, linked to other presentations and include multiple choice questions which have spoken responses for each answer. SlideSpeech* is completely free and open source.

* Previously called Open Allure Dialog System and Wiki-to-Speech.

  • Here is another link with an explicitly cross cultural use of SlideSpeech (7 slides).

  • Thanks John for your proposal

Thanks for your submission to present at the 2011 Global Education Conference. Your proposal looks promising, but could benefit from some additional language that ties your work to the conference theme of global collaboration. Your proposed session may imply global collaborations and connections, but we need to see more explanation of how your work ties into our mission.  The conference seeks to present ideas, examples and initiatives related to connecting educators and classrooms around the world with an emphasis on promoting global awareness and instilling global competency in students. This is not a general education conference nor a technology conference. Please review your submission and adjust accordingly, so that participants clearly understand how your work fits into the mission of the conference.

email me at mirtschin@gmail.com when you have tweaked this submission or if you have any questions.

    Thanks and regards

    • Thanks John for so quickly modifying the proposal.  I changed your top post to display the modifications, so if you want you can delete the revision comment here. Your proposal has been accepted. I will message you with the next steps, so can you check your messages inbox on your page of this ning please and you can choose your day and time. This tool sounds really interesting and I hope that I can attend your session (or listen to the recording) to learn more about it.  If you have any questions, please email me at mirtschin@gmail.com

      Thanks again,

      Cheers

    • Since the mission of the conference is to "increase opportunities for building education-related connections around the globe", I hoped my presentation of a tool which allows for collaborative development of interactive educational content and a way to make presentation videos without requiring a video camera or microphone would give educators and students precisely the kind of communication ability desired for sharing cross-cultural lessons. For Free.

Wiki technology made Wikipedia possible for reference materials. This SlideSpeech (text-to-speech) technology could make a similar global resource possible for learning materials.

      • And John, this is exactly right. Can you add some of this into your conference proposal and you will be 'spot on'. Thanks
