Full Session Description (as long as you would like): 

This session focuses on transfer of learning from the instructional design perspective and offers a number of pedagogical solutions to facilitate learners’ transfer of knowledge and the 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and cultural competence. Transfer of learning forms the basis of thinking, learning and problem-solving and is often considered as the ultimate goal of education. According to one of its broader definitions, transfer of learning is the human ability to use past learning when learning new content and to apply that learning to similar or novel contexts.  One of the challenges that modern educational institutions (K-12 and higher education) often have to face is that the knowledge students learn in one particular context cannot be successfully transferred to another one. As a result, students may become demotivated to use that knowledge outside the school setting and become disengaged.

In this presentation, we will start with discussing the concept of transfer, its significance, and related issues to transfer (challenges, finding similarities, relevance). Next, we will introduce several instructional strategies to facilitate near and far transfer in blended and online learning environments, as well as present some real-world examples, including artifacts, of how learners successfully transfer knowledge to real-world contexts. Qualitative data will also be shared regarding transfer. We will wrap up with practical recommendations for educators and researchers worldwide for enhancing their students’ ability to transfer learning that aligns with learning outcomes and 21st Century Skills.
