Short Session Description (one line):

Students Globalize and Galvanize Students Through Analysis of International Blogs, Newspapers, Non-Print Texts, World Literature and Creation of Original Media Products

Full Session Description (one paragraph minimum):

  • Although we consider our students digital natives and voracious consumers of online media, can we truly call our students globally connected citizens? Are they only connected to one corner of the world—their own? Do our students have a limited worldview even though so many have unlimited access to technology? How can we use international online media sources and world literature to develop students’ global awareness of the social, political, environmental and economic issues plaguing other nations, which ultimately impact us all as human beings? This workshop will model how teachers can use excerpts from international blogs, newspapers, videos, and world literature to raise global awareness through discussions about life and the human condition in other parts of the world.
  • Through the Project Based Learning approach, students take on an authentic role and responsibility in raising the global consciousness and inspiring action in their peer group. By creating an original media product to share online, students can express their opinions, questions and solutions about one or more of the issues they learned about after analyzing an international media source.
  • Students’ creation of original content will reinforce the global consciousness the international media sources aim to advance, and hopefully serve to galvanize local, national and global classmates to learn more and take action. Students’ media products will demonstrate understanding of our interconnectedness through their creation and participation in online forums, blogs, poetry, prose, image galleries and other forms of online expressions that demonstrate and promote global awareness of a particular issue.
