Short Session Description (one line): A brief, pedagogically-based examination of the challenges of supporting academic language development for ELLs within the content-based classroom. Focus on math and science vocabulary.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Supporting non-native English speakers in the traditional, content based classroom presents a variety of challenges particularly with math and science vocabulary. As lexically rich subjects, math and science competency depends on one's ability to fluently speak the language of the content. Through examining how a student's cognitive academic language proficiency(CALP) is acquired and developed in the classroom, teachers can better understand effective methods for supporting CALP development to enhance student learning.
