Systems & Global Engineering Projects

The practice of engineering and technological development is increasingly conducted in a complex, globally distributed environment.  Multiple entities must work together on a range of project components and systems that must, themselves, work together in order for the entire system to operate effectively. The SAGE Project features four curriculum modules that introduce concepts and approaches of systems and global engineering to design/technology, science, and engineering students at the high school level:

 

1.    Core Concepts of Systems Engineering

2.    Home Lighting in Developing Countries

3.    Water Purification

4.    Biodynamic Farming

 

All activities were pilot tested during the 2008-09 school year in high schools in New Jersey as well as other parts of the United States.  The target ages for participating students is 14-18.

 

The project is in need of participating teachers, students and schools from the U.S. and abroad that are interested in acting as collaborative partners in the student design projects featured in the SAGE modules. Teachers may register to use one or more of the modules with their classes.   Ultimately, teams of students from different schools and countries will collaboratively develop a product or system that could improve the quality of life of people in developing countries.

 

These projects will run in classrooms during the 2009-10 school year according to the below tentative dates.  Online short courses for the training/orientation of participating teachers will be provided prior to each project’s start date. The projects and online short courses are offered free of charge.

 

§  Core Concepts – 11-29 January 2010 AND 3-21 May 2010

§  Home Lighting – 15 February - 19 March 2010

§  Biodynamic Farming – 1 March - 30 April 2010

§  Water Purification – 1 March - 16 April 2010

 

This project is organized through a partnership between the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) at Stevens Institute of Technology and the New Jersey Technology Education Association (NJTEA).
