Short Session Description (one line): Take Learning Out of Your Seats and Around the World!
Full Session Description (as long as you would like): It has become increasingly difficult to physically transport students into a situation or culture to let them fully explore and inquire. However, this does not have to be the case. With the productive use of technology, I would like to demonstrate how one teacher took her third graders around the world from the comfort of their desks. Let me share a peek at what occurred inside the walls of her classroom. She launched the school year and her Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop with a Skype author visit to discuss making resolutions for the best school year ever; traveled across the pond to the Roald Dahl museum for a tour via Skype; participated in a Global Read Aloud with students across the globe, blogging and sharing ideas; embarked on a virtual field trip to Antarctica, prompting an inquiry based research project; met Jane Goodall via a Time for Kids Webinar; and became ‘Buncee Buddies’ with students across the globe. This is only a peek at how the students were able to participate in real world, literacy rich situations that took them up, up, and away. The focus of the NYSCC standards for social studies is Communities Around the World. Through the vehicles of Skype, Buncee, and Kidblog, the students were able bridge the land/water gap and make learning situations possible that will immerse them in 21st Century real world situations. Come along for the ride!
