Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
New York University Shanghai is the first Sino-U.S. higher education joint venture university in the People’s Republic of China. Part of the “Global Network University” in New York University, NYU Shanghai is an important portal campus for NYU students to study in. Approximately 300 freshmen students are studying in Shanghai. 150 are international students from the U.S., Australia, Canada, Europe, Latin America, India, etc., while the other half are Chinese national students from various provinces of China. This hybrid of student body makes the university a very diverse community.
Throughout the past semesters, the librarians in NYU Shanghai have played a critical role in collaborating with the Writing Department to teach all 300 freshmen on how to conduct library research. From the librarians’ perspectives, the international students had no difficulty in conducting library research such as database searching, finding primary and secondary sources; however, for the Chinese students, they are unfamiliar with “academic library research” and furthermore, concepts of "academic integrity" is new to them.
This presentation explores the observations, opportunities, and challenges in teaching and engaging with 300 students from all over the world, with an emphasis on the native Chinese students. The presentation summarizes the best practices for librarians to serve as teaching partners to address academic issues of plagiarism and research, and how to integrate American concepts of writing and research in the Chinese context where information is largely difficult to gain access. Attendees will learn the best approach to teaching students from China or Asia on the fundamentals of research and academic integrity.
