Global education means global communications in a global village. Using a mobile device educators can better promote global awareness through better communications. They can also instill increased student retention levels to increase global competency

Do you want to increase your students’ classroom performance?  Research strongly indicates students who take notes increase their retention levels (Rutgers, 2011). 

. . . the result of taking notes is much more than the production of a passive “external” information store, as the note taking action itself is part of the memorization process and results in the creation of a form of “internal” storage. (Boch & Piolat, 2005, p 104)

 To take accurate classroom notes students’ need a note taking system that allows them to take their notes as fast and accurate as a teacher speaks.  “The average writing speed of a student is around 0.3 to 0.4 words per second, whereas a teacher speaks at a rate of around 2 to 3 words per second.” (Boch & Piolat, 2005, p 102)

What user-friendly, self-motivating, modern day note taking system, allows students to [1] take classroom notes in a fast, accurate and convenient, app format, using a lightweight portable tablet or smart phone platform, [2]  “be capable of translating all the popular texting abbreviations into actual words [decode as well as encode], slang,” and over 95% of the most commonly spoken English words, [3] save their classroom notes to their word processor for future editing, formatting, printing, etc., [4] and use an app that is “designed to make communications a breeze” using email, Facebook, Twitter or SMS to a classmate or their teacher (Appshrink, 2011)? THE RUBY TRANSLATOR APP.

One of the Ruby Translator objectives is to provide a texting translation communications app in 9 of the 10 most spoken languages plus Italian and French for the Global Village. At present Apple does not support one of the top 10 spoken languages. Another objective of the Ruby Translator is to provide students, teachers, administrators and counselors, using the most widely used shorthand system in the history of mankink -- texting, to better able communicate [code - encode] with each other using their native tongue by the transmitter and be understood, translated, by the receiver at the tap of a button.

From the teacher management side of the equation the classroom note taking app must be [1]  a note taking app that its “functionality is top-notch” [2] “very affordable,”  [3] flexible to meet the compatibility for every classroom rubric (Lewis, 2011) using “custom dictionary creation” and the ability to fine tune your custom dictionary even further by “adding words or phrases as they see fit” and [4] “makes text communication a breeze” with their students and possibly administrators.   As a teacher you also want a note taking app that recognizes “texting as a global village affair” and “comes with a truly frightening number of languages.” Basically you want what app reviewers say “is the ideal tool” and “is a great app” (Appshrink, 2011 and Patrick, 2011).

  • Thanks for your submission to present at the 2011 Global Education Conference. Your proposal looks promising, but could benefit from some additional language that ties your work to the conference theme of global collaboration. Your proposed session may imply global collaborations and connections, but we need to see more explanation of how your work ties into our mission.  The conference seeks to present ideas, examples and initiatives related to connecting educators and classrooms around the world with an emphasis on promoting global awareness and instilling global competency in students. This is not a general education conference nor a technology conference. Please review your submission and adjust accordingly, so that participants clearly understand how your work fits into the mission of the conference.

      I changed the title of the paper as the Global Village aspects were farther down in our paper. I also added some of the features to the summary in the proposal. Thanks for the suggestions.
