Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
While the concept of participation is an increasingly ubiquitous buzzword in a wide variety of disciplines, it is important to consider its framing and implications across disciplinary boundaries. This talk centers around a key question: what can the educational field learn from the way participation has been conceptualized in other fields, and vice-versa? The stakes of participation are traced across four main domains: education, political philosophy, cultural studies, and art. For each of these fields of inquiry, attention will be paid to a) the core assumptions about what constitutes meaningful participation, and b) the strengths of each of these perspectives, particularly in terms of opportunities for productive cross-pollination with the educational field. Importantly, questions of diversity and equitable opportunities for participation are a key aspect of this investigation, in view of the participation gap and the global power dynamics that condition participatory practices.
