Full session description:

In our world, 1.4 billion people continue to live in extreme poverty – living on less than US$1.25 a day.

Progress towards poverty reduction targets has been significant, but more needs to be done in order to reach current global targets, and to end extreme poverty within a generation.

The Global Poverty Project exists to strengthen the momentum created by the existing movement to end extreme poverty, and to increase the number of everyday people joining their voice to the call for an end to extreme poverty.

Recognising the need to engage people with previous successes of the international anti-poverty movement, and to increase global support for the work of NGOs, governments, multilateral agencies, academics and civil society, the Global Poverty Project developed 1.4 Billion Reasons: a world-class multimedia presentation.

The 1.4 Billion Reasons for Youth presentation has been developed by the Global Poverty Project in partnership with the child-rights organisation Plan in Australia. It has been developed to engage youth with the issue of extreme poverty and inspire them to take action.

Designed to empower youth to become leaders in the movement to end extreme poverty, the Presentation addresses 5 key topics:

- What it means to live in extreme poverty,
- Why we can end extreme poverty,
- The barriers to overcoming extreme poverty,
- Practical actions every young person can take to help end extreme poverty, and
- Actions that other young people have taken.

Throughout the Presentation, the Global Poverty Project emphasises that:

  • Extreme poverty and the issues around it are important, urgent and relate to every person,
  • The global community has the capacity to end extreme poverty within a generation, and every person can play a part in making this happen,
  • Global action is required to overcome the challenges associated with extreme poverty, and
  • Although change will not be quick or easy, every person can play an important role in helping to achieve global poverty reduction goals.

The Presentation outlines the facts of extreme poverty, provides students with a clear framework through which they can consider the issues, and encourages them to formulate their own ideas and actions to make a difference in their global and local community.
