Your Name and Title: Sarah Thomas, Assistant Professor

School or Organization Name: Bridgewater State University

Co-Presenter Name(s):

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: United States, Boston

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): Individuals curious about the impact a study tour can have on perception as well as learn how a study tour can have a life of its own!

Short Session Description (one line): The impact a short study tour to Jordan had on students' perceptions of themselves and of "others"

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): This sessions examines how a one-week study tour provided a cultural immersion experience for a group of undergraduate and graduate students from a public university in Massachusetts. Through an online questionnaire, the study found four areas influenced by a cultural immersion experience: an increased awareness of social justice, a changed worldview, empathy for others and personal growth. Results suggest individuals who participated in an overseas immersion tour may have more cultural empathy for individuals from the Middle East and who practice Islam.

  • Hi Sarah,

I am wondering if you could send through some info on your presentation? I unfortunately was not able to attend live and when I went on to listen to the recording, it seems that the session wasn't recorded.

I'd love to read more about your findings!

    Thanks,

    Siobhan

    • Dear Siobhan,

I tried to email you directly, but the email was bouncing back. Unfortunately I had a family emergency so I couldn't do the session, I tried to attach a PDF of my PPT, but it won't accept it. I'd love to talk more or even think about ways to work together, so if you could send me another email address I will send it to you.

      Best,

      Sarah

      • Hi Sarah,

I am sorry to hear about your family emergency, I hope things have settled for you.

I'd love to chat more with you about this! I am intending on writing a Masters dissertation on how cross-cultural competency might benefit students from a non-CALD background, so I think we share fertile ground for collaborating!

Here is another email to try; siobhan@generateworldwide.com

No idea why the other one didn't work! Maybe try this; smarsh@woodleigh.vic.edu.au
