Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Global citizenship education (GCE) has recently emerged as a dynamic approach to education capturing the interest of various stakeholders, including academics, educators and international organisations worldwide. In an increasingly interconnected world, GCE is seen as a transformative pedagogy that can empower learners to resolve global challenges and build a better future for all. This session will address the efforts of international organisations to foster GCE and include it in the post 2015 development agenda. At first, the presentation will discuss GCE as described by the United Nations, UNESCO, the European Union and Oxfam. As there is no widely accepted definition, parameters for interpreting GCE will be mentioned. The envisaged role of global citizenship in the post 2015 development agenda will then be analysed, questioning the efforts to establish indicators for measuring this concept. Discourse analysis of official policy documents, as well as interviews with international policy officials are the research methods employed to collect and analyse our data.
