Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Numbers and statistics can be intimidating for students and adults alike. However, graphical displays of information turn abstract and often times disorganized data into illustrations that are easier to comprehend. A well-designed data visualization–be it a chart, a map, a timeline, or an infographic–presents tremendous learning opportunities for students as it prompts them to assess the relationship between different data points and ask questions. Owing to new technology and the growing amount of datasets available to the public, teachers can now find a wealth of data visualizations that address various global issues in innovative and engaging ways.
Using examples of innovative data visualization, this presentation invites educators to discuss the advantages and pitfalls of using data to explain global issues such as economy, global health and human rights. The presentation will also demonstrate the procedures of using one specific dataset in the classroom to foster inquiry and critical thinking. Teachers will walk away with numerous resources of data visualization that they can use with students at all grade levels.
