Understanding of 21st Century Democracy

SUGGESTING A PROJECT

Are there limitations in a democratic society? Have these changed? Where to draw the line between Democracy and Anarchy in Europa in the 21st century.

A short description of my proposal for a project England/Norway.

With background in the recent tragedy in Norway July 22nd and what is going on
in the streets of London and other cities in the UK it would be challenging to
see if we can get the 14-16 year olds perception and thoughts about these
events. In Norway the perpetrator has said it´s all about protecting Europa
from Islam (influence on our society). In 50 years 85% of the people of Europa
will thank him for what he “had to do”. He says he´s sorry he
had to do it, but he is at war, considers himself a worrier, and it was
necessary.

In England there are still many different opinions on what is behind the riots.
Is it racial, political, or just a mob without any kind of social understanding
and social “belonging”. Opportunistic crime?

Both Norway and England are democratic countries, with a very high threshold
for individual opinion and conviction. But how far can we stretch the line for
individual opinions and behavior within the framework of democracy and social
awareness and responsibilities?

Group project, 3-4 student per group.

- describe their understanding of democracy

- responsibilities within the framework of democracy

- what kind of reaction towards them who “break the rules”
(sanctions)

- Something that the schools / teachers can do better, or is it the
responsibility of the parents, or both?

- importance of the local community (belonging)

Through a presentation, PowerPoint or as a video, present issues and thoughts
(debating the situation and challenges), and a conclusion on how they believe
it´s best to preserve democracy for future generations.

These are just thoughts I have had wondering how to be able to work with these
serious matters with the students. We have to debate it, to deal with it. Maybe
this is one way?
