Short Session Description (one line): How are academic nomads changing the landscape and terrains of possibilities for blended learning?
Full Session Description: International education is an important driver of foreign diplomacy, national security and the global economy. However, the meaning of “international education” is changing as institutions evolve, borders blur, and policies shift. More international students are studying in the US, an increase in domestic students participating in study abroad, and an evolving online education landscape requires faculty and administrators to consider student mobility in a new light.
This session will explore the changing landscape of international higher education, and the need for a reconceptualization of mobility amid the lived experiences of academic nomads today. This session will offer a new term, academic nomad, to characterize participants amid these trends. This term captures both the fluidity and the intersectionality of today’s global citizen and offers an adaptive approach to the future of international education.
Online and blended learning academic programs are products of international higher education’s changing landscape. The International Relations Online program at American University’s School of International Service is a hybrid two-year Master’s degree, and serves as a case study to highlight the challenges and complexities in the field while offering tips and strategies for creative innovation.
Through this session, conference attendees will gain an expanded understanding of international student mobility, changes in the shifting identities of student communities, and learn about sustainable ways to address the evolving needs and demands of academic nomads.
