Your Name and Title: Mr. Andrew Weiler, Language Learning Specialist, Author
School or Organization Name: Strategies in Language Learning
Co-Presenter Name(s):
Area of the World from Which You Will Present: Australia
Language in Which You Will Present: English
Target Audience(s): language teachers
Short Session Description (one line): Transforming world language learning through examining the implications of learner engagement
Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Many people talk about the importance of learner engagement. Though there is an increasing understanding of the importance of engagement in the learning process, there is a lack of understanding of what learner engagement really means. Once teachers better understand learner engagement and the factors that lead to it, they will be better equipped to create activities and lessons that learners can learn from so the results are growing confidence and enhanced progress.
Engagement is one of the qualities that are needed in the Global Age. It is all well and good to have access to tools that enable worldwide education and learning, however without understanding what needs to be done to foster learner engagement, there will be many learners who will just sit and watch but not fully engage. Without full engagement, outcomes will inevitably be limited.
Some of the factors that will be addressed are:
- what is it that prompts people to engage,
- the place of understanding in the process of engagement,
- how can student skills be developed in this context,
- how can we utilise student interests,
- The importance of learner perception and how to use it to drive engagement
- the critical importance of calibrating levels of challenge.
