Short Session Description (one line): I will share my experience of using specially developed online resources for teaching English to students from under-served and underprivileged communities enrolled in a U.S. Government funded project called English Access Microscholarship Program.

 

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): In this presentation, I will share how using online resources enhanced students’ English language learning and helped them learn about the world by using these resources.  

 

I have been a part of the team administering a US Government funded English language teaching program for students from underserved communities since 2010. As we believe and have experienced through iEARN online collaborative projects that technology can enhance learning and provide a platform to engage students in dialogue with global audience, we integrate technology in this English language teaching program called English Access Microscholarship Program. In addition to available resources e.g. Skype and social media, online resources developed by U.S. Department of State are also used. These include a website americanenglish.state.gov and a 3D English language teaching game called Trace Effects. Using these resources has enhanced not only students’ English language proficiency, it has also developed their sense of global citizenship and they are more aware of the global perspective of education. In Pakistan society where there is a lack of open dialogue and a tendency towards extremism due to poverty and illiteracy, the students using these resources engage in open dialogue and communication to share their ideas and learn about the world.
