We would intend talking about the success of our VIOLA project as described in more detail below. We plan to give others an insight into how the same project can be implemented within their own school.
Life today is challenging for young people. Living faster, technologically-centred lives and confronted with many examples of celebrity misbehaviour, young people today find themselves in need of suitable role models to whom they can look as a reference for living a good life. Due to the diversity of the backgrounds of the 7 participating schools from throughout Europe, , many of the young people who benettied from this project experience a range of approaches to personal values and some have little to aspire to emulate in terms of a behaviour that is of benefit to the whole of society. It was our main desire that the VIOLA (Values In Our Lives Always – this is our OWN acronym, it did not pre-exist) project would stimulate a different way of thinking amongst the young people participating in the project, so that they may see the benefits of exhibiting values that are important within modern society in order to behave as good citizens.
Having implemented a ground-breaking Values project within the Royal Masonic School, it was felt that the time was right to collaborate with schools around Europe in order to share the progress made so far, to discover the Values that young people throughout Europe believe are crucial and to formulate a Student Manifesto so that young people can truly aspire to having 'Values In Our Lives Always'. This Manifesto - like the TED-inspired 'Charter for Compassion' – has been written and agreed upon by the participating schools, and then young people around the world can sign it via the website we create. Additionally we have an Open Badge infrastructure which allows students to earn rewards for exhibiting values in their everyday lives. We have ultimately striven to establish an 'International Day of Values' for which our manifesto would be a trigger for discussion and linchpin for other schools to follow but this is the last thing we have left to achieve at the time of writing this application.
By doing this all of this we have hoped to make the world a better place. We do not believe that it is too grandiose to have aimed for such an outcome.
