Short Session Description: Teacher Lucy Crehan spent 8 months last year visiting schools in 5 top performing education systems. Here she discusses what she learnt.
Full Session Description:
Lucy became disillusioned with some of the policy initiatives she was subject to while teaching in England, and so went and did a Masters in Education Policy to see whether there was a better way to run an education system. She enjoyed this, but still had lots of questions that couldn't be answered by reading OECD reports on 'top performing' PISA systems, so decided to go and take a look for herself.
She spent 3-4 weeks in classrooms in Finland, BC Canada, New Zealand, Singapore and Japan, sometimes teaching, sometimes watching, and heard directly from teachers and students in each place what they thought made their system good, and what could be better. She wrote about it at the time on her blog (address below).
She is currently writing a book about what she found, and is keen to hear from other educators about what they think we can learn from top performing systems (if they have experiences of these systems themselves) and what they would most like to read about. In this session she will give a broad overview of what she learnt, while leaving plenty of time for questions.
