Short Session Description (one line):

What does it mean to be a Global Educator and how can we design lessons that help students become Global Citizens?

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Honor and Amy will provide educators with online coaching to guide them through a reflection on what it means to be a global educator and then through a process for incorporating global competencies into their lesson design.

This session will begin with a reflective activity for participants to self-identify how they view themselves in the world in terms of what it means to be a global citizen based on Mark Gerzon’s work in his book Global Citizens. Where do you find yourself on this matrix of global citizenry?

  • Citizen 1.0 – Worldview based on one’s self (egocentric)
  • Citizen 2.0 – Worldview based on one’s group (ideocentric)
  • Citizen 3.0 – Worldview based on one’s nation (socoiocentric)
  • Citizen 4.0 – Worldview based on multiple cultures (multicentric)
  • Citizen 5.0 – Worldview based on the whole Earth (geocentric)

Next Honor and Amy will coach participants through the cognitive process of designing lessons that help students develop as Global Citizens. They will share a planning template that provides a framework for applying a global mindset to lesson planning.

This approach combines Mark Gerzon’s work with the Asia Society’s definition of global competence around these four domains:

  • Investigating the world
  • Recognizing perspectives
  • Communicating ideas
  • Taking action

The planning tools can be used to refine existing curriculum or create something new. Q&A time at the end will provide an opportunity for participants to share lesson ideas with each other.
