Short Session Description (one line):
With the increase in outsourced and global online tutors and virtual coaches in higher education who is really delivering, assessing, and providing feedback on the student’s learning gains?
Full Session Description (one paragraph minimum):
Higher Education is big business. There is a lot of money involved from student loans, grants, scholarships and Alumni donations so it is only logical that the more students a university brings in, the more money that university has access to. What happens when the balance of sustainability gets skewed? Additional revenue is sought and the first place to look is recruitment of new students. The question immediately becomes one of how to serve these new students without increasing the costs to university. Enter the world of the global online tutor and virtual coach.
In today’s online Higher Educational classroom, there is an unfortunate trend away from the former best practice number of 32 students per course to mass enrollment courses taken by hundreds or thousands of students with multiple sections delivered by outsourced and online tutors and virtual coaches. As a revenue stream this appears to be a cash cow however, when these outsourced global tutors and coaches are given instructional, assessment, and grading duties the question then becomes who is the student really learning from?
This session will explore the numbers, immediate implications, and long term potential outcomes of this rapidly growing practice.
