Short Session Description (one line):

A discussion of global collaborative Scratch projects

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

International and cross-generational collaboration through the Scratch environment provides students with an opportunity to work with others in the local and global community. In this session, we would like to describe “World Museum Project”, a network for international cross-cultural and cross-generational collaboration involving schools and museums in more than 50 locations on the 5 continents.  We will illustrate with examples how we promote global awareness and propose new principles for constructing global communities through collaborative projects.  We will also discuss new collaboration styles that have evolved in some recent collaboration projects we have done.  These projects include World Makers Project in which students in different cultural backgrounds share the processes of making things (foods, toys, crafts, tools, artworks, etc.), World Music Project in which students around the world contribute recordings of their musical performances in different locations to create a large scale interactive animation project using Scratch. We have shared such global project in local workshops with professional musicians so local children can experience expressing themselves through music in global perspective.  We try to structure these global projects, so as to give children opportunities to challenge themselves to create new friendships, new meanings that would ultimately help them to construct a global community.   We will discuss how these global collaboration projects can promote global awareness and help children develop as global citizens.
