Short Session Description (one line):

 World Museum Scratch Projects

Full Session Description:

International and cross-generational collaboration through the Scratch environment provides students with an opportunity to work with others in the local and global community to communicate their ideas and promote global friendships and awareness. In this session, we would like to describe “World Museum Project”, an international cross-cultural and cross-generational collaboration, focusing on the process of how it evolved from a small project connecting two schools, into a project involving many schools/groups, and discuss a set of design principles that developed through organizing such collaborative projects.

There are several activities framed in World Museum related to interactions between schools and universities which develop a rich environment working with multimedia projects with Scratch . In this context, students want to learn more about using Scratch and interact with students from all around the world. The main goal is having fun and learn how to integrate collaborative projects using Scratch.

All students will have access to Voicethread and one Edmodo group so they can interact freely in groups to in order to work in a collaborative Scratch project. There are several topics:

  • World Lunchbox (Food and gastronomy)
  • Water Creatures (Fauna in sea and creative creatures)
  • Music Projects (traditional or meaningful songs in your country)

The program focuses on creating attractive multimedia elements using the Scratch programming language and interacting through Edmodo and Voicethread with other countries. Communication is enhanced through videoconference in a Skype session.

The objectives proposed in this section are:

  • Promote the creation of multimedia content to express, communicate and interact with others.
  • Enabling autonomy in working with tools on Educational Technology.
  • Improve enrichment through an interaction with students of different nationalities and cultures, taking advantage of asynchronous communication with Edmodo and Voicethread
  • Use synchronous communication through Interactive Videoconferencing.
  • Learn in a practical and enjoyable way, integrating collaborative projects using the program Scratch.
  • Develop interest in others through interaction and expression.

Communication (VoiceThread):

  • Use VoiceThread to comment on each other’s works and ask/answer questions.
  • The purpose is to develop deeper interests in each other and each other’s lives expressed in the projects.
  • There will be one group on Edmodo to enhance communication.

The program is driven by World Museum Project with the involvement of several students and partners.

Conclusions

Using Scratch improves students’ motivation, creativity, encouragement and the opportunity to work on projects. There is also a promotion of a student-based learning and the empowerment of a greater autonomy by the students.
