Greetings, GEC Members!
Recently I had the very special privilege of meeting one of our 2011 GlobalEdCon keynotes at the Illinois Computing Educators conference. It's always a thrill when I get to meet members of our community in person, and it was no exception with Pam Allyn. Pam is the executive director of LitWorld, a literacy organization that facilitates book clubs and other projects around the globe. She is truly inspirational, incredibly knowledgable about education, and motivates others with her fabulous sense of humor. You can watch the recording of her 2011 GlobalEdCon keynote (click on the RECORDING link) to get know more about her work.
Tomorrow marks the date of one of her projects, World Read Aloud Day, and it's not too late to sign up to participate whether you are an educator, parent, or concerned citizen who believes in the power of literacy. From the LitWorld web site:
Read It Forward on World Read Aloud Day
Celebrate by reading aloud, giving away a book, or taking action in any way you can to Read It Forward on behalf of the 793 million people who cannot read.
Imagine a world where everyone can read...
World Read Aloud Day is about taking action to show the world that the right to read and write belongs to all people. World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words, especially those words that are shared from one person to another, and creates a community of readers advocating for every child’s right to a safe education and access to books and technology.By raising our voices together on this day we show the world’s children that we support their future: that they have the right to read, to write, and to share their words to change the world.
It’s time to join the Global Literacy Movement.
I'll be reading aloud tomorrow with my own children, Julia and Henry, and I hope that you'll find time to spread the joy of books with others, too. Please help by forwarding this on to others!
Thanks,
Lucy Gray
