After the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, over a billion dollars in aid was promised to the struggling island. The world stepped up, empathized and donated. Yet much of the funds pledged to post-quake relief for has not been received for redevelopment and very little has been done to rebuild.
Haiti is the world's oldest black republic and one of the oldest republics in the Western Hemisphere, a cultural and historical gem. But why did it take over 5 decades for the US government to recognize the free black nation of Haiti? Why has the aid promised to Haiti by international aid agencies, not reached the Haitian public? Why has the US sponsored coup de tats against Haiti's democratically elected President Jean Bertrand Aristide? The world has turned its focus away and promises to the Haitians are unfulfilled.
Explore these issues with us as we learn how the island nation struggles to rebuild. From the health care crises (like cholera and malaria), to the need for true democracy to return to Haiti. This delegation explores the rich Haitian culture, in the backdrop of its bitter colonial and neocolonial struggles for freedom and sovereignty. The delegation highlights the amazing agency of a few every day heroes, standing up in the face of incredible odds, in addition to looking at the real social and economic needs of the nation.
