'Tis the season for butterfly rearing and I'm looking for grade 1 or 2 classes who would like to talk to kids in Eugene, OR about their experiences raising butterflies. I imagine a simple Skype video call would do the job, can help you if you are new to Skype.

  • I'm just reading this now, and I imagine your butterflies have hatched by now. However, you might be interested in a twitter like collaboration?
I work with first and second grade teachers and have recently found out about edmodo - an educational twitter-like tool. Would you be interested in partnering with this level classroom to see what evolves while using such a tool?
As I understand edmodo, the teacher creates an account and receives a code for her class. She then can enroll students using the code, or tell another teacher the code and have another classroom share the account and be able to read each other's posts during the day. The posts are short like in twitter. You can also post assignments or suggestions for subjects to comment about, or simply post what's going on in your classroom. Simply forming sentences and ideas at this level may be motivation enough.
I just started ours and am looking to see how it works. Are you interested?
I work in Bedford, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. Bedford is next to Lexington, where I live. Lexington is the birthplace for the American Revolution.... Bedford was also a strong player on April 18, 1776. Anyway, I'm a tech specialist and am looking for ways to introduce my teachers to Web 2.0 and their children to fun ways to practice their reading and writing skills. Hope you're interested.

      • we did raise butterflies in the fall, actually. We love to collaborate! We would be willing to pop by and say hello and share our experience.
        • Thanks Maria! We have been very fortunate to have a great response and are being challenged to juggle all our collaborations this spring! We'd like to talk to you in the fall when you raise butterflies again. It would be nice to meet with both the graduating first graders (for whom this experience is fresh in their minds, and boy do they love their butterflies) and also with new first graders who can look forward to the experience in the spring. Let's put a tickler in our calendars to check in again in the fall!
