Short Session Description (one line): Develop a district-wide collaboration project with Google’s Apps—Education
- Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Collaboration sums up 21st century education. No longer are students confined to classrooms within one school building. Rather, they are connected globally through phones, through television, and through computers. Learning is not limited to the walls of a classroom—it extends across disciplines, across the globe. Likewise, 21st century communication is immediate and collaborative. At home, students may post thoughts on their Facebook page, thereby communicating with a global audience. With a global audience comes an increased power through communication. Students, faculty, and community members can broadcast their ideas to a larger audience and retrieve more support and momentum for district causes. The dynamics of communication, learning, and instruction are definitive of Web 2.0 tools—instantaneous, collaborative, simultaneous, and unlimited. And, Google Apps for Education has catered its Web 2.0 applications specifically towards education.
In the project outlined, students, staff, and community members will engage in a year-long district collaborative activity. Hence, all members of the district community will be involved in the process. Whole-school engagement will reiterate the importance of real-world learning application.
In this session, not only will educators engage in a hands-on approach to building a collaborative project, they will align each step with the National Educational Technology Standards and they will develop common assessments to use in Response to Intervention and in Professional Learning Communities.
