Short Session Description (one line): This session will explore the high-stakes school partnership in development between The Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn, New York and the war-torn Bumpe region in Sierra Leone.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like): In December of 2011, The Berkeley Carroll School will be bringing high school students from Sierra Leone to New York, to present at the United Nations student conference on Discrimination Against Human Rights Defenders. This project, which is almost entirely student-led, will eventually include the travel of BCS students to Sierra Leone, and the creation of a long-term scholarship at Bumpe High School. The session will be overseen by Jennifer D. Klein, who organized and helped facilitate the programming, but will be led by Elena Hirsch, the student whose passion for children's rights was the impetus for this long-term, high-stakes collaboration which, she hopes, will give a real voice to Sierra Leonean children within the structures of the United Nations.
