Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Creating meaningful learning events for students which address the multitude of demands on educators requires a creative, synthetic approach to classroom teaching.  This presentation offers an example of such an approach.

Emphasis in this presentation is on the globalizing of historical narratives. Since 2000, the La Pietra Report has led the way for the broadening of traditional, national explanations, narratives, and units of analysis about the past.  Also, the term "global" can be interpreted as an approach that uses voices and perspectives from a nation not typically included. For example, globalizing Cold War events utilized sources that are not USA or Soviet related, thus expanding historical agency and contemporary understanding.Following this approach to history, this presentation explains how to incorporate transnational, regional, global, systems thinking, and marginalized national voices in the construction of historical narratives.

Teachers need not be an expert in any of the area in order to effectively use them with students.  Rather, must be willing to facilitate the instructional dynamics, engage students in the development of meaningful skills, and provide options for students to demonstrate their understanding.

The objectives of this presentation are:

Objective 1:  Summarize the theories of each educational model.

Objective 2:  Outline and demonstrate a 21st century teaching and learning event.

Objective 3:  Provide online resources for educators to consider,  use in their classes, and share with colleagues.

Objective 4: Facilitate an online discussion and respond to questions regarding the presentation.

  • Craig--this looks great, and your resource websites are intriguing.  I think you need to make more explicit the global aspect of the presentation--"Globalizing Historical Narratives" sounds great, but I can't tell what that actually means from the proposal.  If/when you update it, would you email me and let me know?  steve@hargadon.com
