Full Session Description:

Let’s go beyond the classroom to see how service learning and social entrepreneurship foster innovative thinking and problem-solving. Student involvement in service learning projects can inspire out of the box - and beyond the bubble - thinking and force students to not only think globally, but problem-solve and create unique solutions to “wicked” problems. This in turn fosters social entrepreneurship as students can mobilize to create long-term sustainable solutions to issues of global significance. Participants will hear how service learning differs from social entrepreneurship, the benefits of SL and SE depending on context, and finally tools and platforms to connect their learning and promote global collaboration and flat, connected learning. This session focuses not only on the ‘local’ but gives authentic examples of how the ‘global’ is possible and an essential part of action-based learning within education.

Sharon will share how service learning projects can foster 21st century learning skills for students and provide some real-life examples of service learning projects that are challenging students in Asia and Africa. Karishma will give an overview of social entrepreneurship and share examples of young students who are innovatively designing solutions with a business model to a global issue. Julie will share strategies for connecting learning globally through the use of various tools, platforms and social media.
