Teachers with all levels of understanding or experience with disability issues or working with students with disabilities
Short Session Description (one line):
Prepare young people to recognize disability as part of human diversity by integrating a class curriculum on disability rights at home and abroad.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Despite growing up with the independent living movement and Americans with Disabilities Act in the United States, and the movement to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities worldwide, young people today gain little formal education about disability. Exposing students to the historical and cultural context of disability in their home countries and around the world can lay the foundation for recognizing disability as yet another form of diversity and for combating stigma.
In this session, teachers will learn key terms and events in recent disability history in the U.S. and internationally. The presenter will highlight projects and examples that bridge understanding among students from different countries and abilities, and attendees will be invited to describe their experiences or projects.

Thank you to everyone who joined this session! It's so exciting to meet others who are passionate about inclusive education and bridging international cultures and communities. Please note that I have uploaded the Powerpoint slides to the session description (under "attachments") and have pasted the links to some of the resources I mentioned below. If you have experiences or ideas to share about educating students about disability and international disability issues, and how to connect students of mixed abilities to those in classrooms around the world, please share them in the comments or email me at aholben@miusa.org.
