I am working with a 5th grade teacher and her class on a school-year-long unit concerning global awareness. Our end goal for this project is for the students to be able to find global connections with other students by recognizing similarities and through shared experiences with students in other countries. The classroom teacher and I would also like to support the students in a service learning project of their own conception that will represent a culmination of their learning. The students, classroom teacher, and I have started a wiki where we are going to be collecting all of our ideas and research for this subject: http://e23growingtogether.wikispaces.com/ We would love to connect with a classroom in another country in order to begin a cultural exchange of sorts and then to collaborate with on a service learning project. This is our first attempt at a project of this sort, so we are open to any suggestions. If this is something that you would be interested in partnering with us on, please email me as soon as possible. Thanks! Jennifer

    • Hi all!

With the help of Chrissy in Bangkok we have narrowed down the scope of the collaborative project. We have decided that we will be creating a wiki as a living brochure as if we are having the students attract visitors to our country/region/city. With this type of loose guideline each classroom may be able to easily tailor the project to fit their needs. Our 5th graders in Sherwood, Oregon will be focusing on government as well as some other student generated topics. I created an initial outline of the project in a Google doc. Here is the link to view the outline: http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0Abwxedw-s_2OZGNybnRnMzdfNThkNm1tc...

Please let me know if you are still interested in joining us in this project.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

  • Jennifer,
Thanks so much for considering me, but I don't think I will be able to join your project at this time. Since I primarily teach writing and have a very full curriculum, I don't have any extra room for a unit or study of global climate change or environmentalism.
Thanks again, and I wish you all the best on your project!

  • Hi Jennifer,
It would be interesting to join your service learning project.
Our class is 5th Grade (age 10-11) in a HK school.
Would you mind letting us know more about your project?
    Cheers,
    Sally
  • Hi everyone!
Kindra (the classroom teacher) and I are excited that so many of you are interested in this project. In order to see where we all are on this I have created a Google form for you to fill out – I will send it in a separate email. Kindra and I have answered the questions already and all the information is being compiled in a Google spreadsheet. I do not have email addresses for Brian and Liza in which to send a link to the form, but here is a link so that everyone may view the spreadsheet:
    http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Arwxedw-s_2OdFEwSDA5ZGFtVUR...

If Brian and Liza send me their email addresses I will send you an invitation for the form as well. If there are any problems or questions about the Google form or spreadsheet or anything else about the project, please email me at jscypins[at]gmail.com.

I am looking forward to hearing from you all soon!

  • Hi , I'm Liza and I am teaching English as a second language in a Year 4 and Year One class in Malaysia. I have started using web 2.0 tech in my class since few years back. And we have had partners in learning from mostly New Zealand classes. Would love to join your global awareness programme together with the kids. I'm sure its gonna be fun and very educational. Please contact me back so we could discuss. I am reachable via skype : mylizza01
  • This sounds like a wonderful project, and I would possibly be interested in collaborating, also. I am a little worried about the timeline, though. You mentioned it is a year-long project - when do you envision it being finished? My school year will be over at the beginning of June 2010.

I teach Writing/English to 6th grade students (11-12 years old) in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA. I am also the Technology Integration Specialist for my school. I have wanted to establish some sort of intercultural exchange with my students for a very long time, and this sounds like just the sort of project I was looking for.

    Thanks for considering us,
    Mrs. Liz Peters
