Short Session Description : Promoting and recognizing the development of global competency / global citizenship in young people
Full Session Description :
The session will focus on the International Global Citizen’s Award – an international, non-competitive grassroots programme that aims to promote the development of young people (aged 11 up) as global citizens, and to recognize this development. (If the term “global citizen” is a problem – think “global competency”. Use of vocabulary in different countries gets in the way of emerging common understandings).
Centers in 15 countries are operating the Award, adapting and implementing a common framework within their local contexts. We share experiences and, in some cases, collaborate in shared projects. The programme focuses on the lives and actions of young people and their impact on the environment and the life of others in their everyday lives.
An essential aspect is the full participation of young people themselves, including contributing to decisions on who receives the Award and acting as mentors. Over a thousand participants have received the Award.
There are four strands
Understanding other cultures and outlooks
Personal global footprint
Influence and involvement with others
Recording and reflecting on change and development
The Award programme is very flexible and can be implemented partly within the curriculum, as an after-school activity or in various other ways, and participants range in age from 11 to 18.
We can only operate because of the internet, require no travel, and are low on costs and bureaucracy.
Boyd will outline some of the thinking behind the Award (why global citizenship (or whatever) is not another “subject”); the components of the Award, and how it is being operated in different centres and countries. Mona will outline why her own school in India has started the Award, and how it is being implemented.
