What does the research say about global classroom collaborations? What impacts have been measured in studies? How do these impacts guide what should happen in schools to maximize the value of global classroom collaborations? Can global collaborations contribute to students’ becoming “global citizens” ? Presenter Dr. Laurence Peters is author of an ISTE book, Global Education: Using Technology to Bring the World to Your Students, and Scaling Up Success: Lessons from Technology Based Educational Improvement (with Dede and Honan). He will share insights from ongoing work on how e-learning contributes to the formation of global citizenship. Dr. Rita Oates will provide a brief survey of a few studies conducted in multiple settings: in elementary classrooms in New Hampshire and Australia; in elementary classrooms in Georgia and the UK; in high school classrooms in California, China, and countries following Islam; in secondary classrooms collaborating in Spanish or French, between students in the USA and Canada and students who are native speakers of Spanish or French. The conclusion will provide some guidance to those who wish to maximize the learning impact of global collaborations and suggestions for further research.
