STEAM: Using Art to Bridge Cultural and Language Boundries
Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
STEM to STEAM provides real world scenarios and applications of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Including the art component allows for cross cultural connections, building extended learning communities beyond any boundaries of language, cultural, class, ethnicity, and socio-economic status. STEAM camps can serve as professional development for entire communities by exposing participants to careers and professionals around the world. Students along with teachers model problem solving, critical thinking, and fostered creativity, which can create a fun and engaging learning experience for all. Learn how STEAM camp participants from a small rural town connected with other students and professionals across the nation, utilizing the MMS Challenge curriculum, which highlights NASA's 2014 MMS Mission. Students showcased a self directed learning Space Lounge museum exhibition for both local and national communities to enjoy. STEAM programs build relationships by using the arts as a communication medium. Art can be a public science interface and is universally recognized, crossing language and cultural barriers. Pictorial representations easily cross language and cultural boundaries and can more easily explain complex ideas. In addition, art humanizes the study of the sciences and stimulates curiosity and creativity.

You may want to make contact with Joni Schwarts Ph.D. (a member here) who share a session with last year. Her work in NYC shows that STEM with minority urban youth works because of the "Mentoring" the youth receives from a teachers who does project based learning, tutors and mentors.
This is a a very important point. Because when school turn away from humanities for STEM they can de humanize the educational system.
Joni has put out a documentary worth looking at

Thank you. I will connect with her today and am always looking for new research partners that are humanities advocates.
How does this proposal relate to the mission of the conference? Please revise if you'd like this to be accepted.
