Short bio or reason for joining Actionable Innovations Global:
To let educators know about advancing global competency in the Middle School classrooms using the Journeys in Film program.
Global education projects or initiatives in which you are involved (if applicable):
The mission of Journeys in Film is to educate students to achieve global literacy using interdisciplinary classroom materials based on award winning foreign films. Educating the media-saavy youth of today requires more than textbooks. Journeys in Film uses the visual storytelling of films in the development of standards-based lesson plans in core subjects, including science, math, language arts/visual literacy, social studies, inter-cultural communication and the arts. The Journeys’ model exemplifies best practices in education, which encourages team teaching, cross-curricular implementation and professional development instruction, in order to foster deeper learning. Age-appropriate feature films offer a “window to the world” to help students in America’s classrooms mitigate attitudes of cultural bias, develop a deeper understanding of global issues, and make relevant connections to their own community and family experiences. Currently, the program utilizes films from Iran, New Zealand, South Korea, Tibet, India and South Africa. Students challenge traditional gender roles in Maori culture/New Zealand through Whale Rider, play soccer and learn about refugees with young Tibetan monks in The Cup, sip tea in an Iranian living room while being exposed to positive images about the Middle East through Children of Heaven, and experience unconditional love between a South Korean spoiled boy and his mute, rural grandmother in The Way Home… and return before the bell rings! Our pilot study, which included 4,000 students from 7 cities, shows that students who encountered the JiF program experienced a 25% shift in attitude regarding understanding and acceptance of cultural differences, increased willingness to meet people from other countries; and decreased ethnocentricity about U.S. culture. Plans to develop the next set of guides are underway and will be based on films from China, Cuba, Israel and South America.

Hola.

Joanne You will love what we are doing.. perhaps we can join forces
"I am Africa. This is my story..." YouTube digital storytelling campaign and Ning community sponsored by UNESCO PPN.
We have launched a digital story telling site and resources for African schools, NGOs and media organizations.. You can join, download curriculum or have youth view the site. This is great media, social platform to teach African youth that they have right to express themselves and that good ethics and hard work really do deliver successful people.
goto: http://i-am-the-story.ning.com
There is a downloadable curriculum and a train the traininer certification program for you organization on how to put on these workshops. You can see this in practice in the Cameroon group on the site.
UNESCO PPN funded this because they agreed that the false images of African youth by international press need to be reversed. Now is our chance to demonstrate that and give our young staff members a change to express themselves. It should be empowering and loads of fun. Some of these stories were made with cell phones.
For your staff and educators there is a full curriculum "How to tell a digital story" guides available for downloads and sample of African Youth Digital Storytelling YouTubes
We hope this helps you work. If you know of small African groups with no funds they can use our community as their website and to tell their story at no cost.
Please join us in helping African youth tell their wonderful stories of persistence, intelligence and grace.
