The Institute uses a hands-on approach to implementing WIDA tools in the classroom to serve multilingual learners. Heather is the Director for GCEN and CTE at Digital Promise. She previously worked at the Center for Global Education at the Asia Society, where her work focused on international best practices and integrating global competence into Career Technical Education (CTE) programs as well as state and national policy. Heather leads the Global Cities Education Network (GCEN), a network of international cities focused on best practice sharing in education. She speaks and writes regularly on global education, including as the former host of Education Week’s Global Learning blog.

What's it All About?

The words “digital” and “global” preface our 21st century understanding of citizenship, but what does it actually mean to be an effective and ethical digital citizen in a globalized world? How can we support students to responsibly contribute to digital, global communities? In this interactive workshop, educators will learn the “what” and “why” of digital citizenship, along with how it relates to global citizenship. Through self-reflection, pedagogical exploration, discussions, and activities, educators will build their own competence as they learn to model responsible digital citizenship and apply tips, strategies, and resources for developing students’ competence as digital citizens in an interconnected and interdependent world.

This workshop will include guest speaker Dr. LeeAnn Lindsay, digital citizenship expert and Edvolve Dig Cit Doctor.

How can one develop self and social awareness without understanding culture? In this workshop, educators will learn about Social Emotional Learning, its benefits, and connection to global competence. Through practical strategies and activities, educators will leave equipped with resources and prepared to develop students’ social, emotional, and global competence and embed globally-focused SEL practices in their instruction. Attending the Institute is a first step in learning how WIDA resources work together to support multilingual students and their teachers. Institute participants benefit from networking opportunities with international educators both in person and through an online community forum.
