I'm from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto and I'm working on a research project, Educating for global citizenship: Teachers’ understandings and pedagogical practices in Canada with Mark Evans, Leigh-Anne Ingram, and Angela MacDonald. Our study is sponsored by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Institutional Grant and we're looking at teachers’ understandings and practices as global citizenship educators.

I was hoping to connect with teachers from British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario (elementary or secondary) that are interested in participating our Educating for Global Citizenship Study. I'd also like to hear from anyone else who is also interested in the practice of teaching for global perspectives.

My background in education includes teaching at an alternative school within the Toronto District School Board and working for the Equity Dept. I also worked with an international development NGO umbrella organization. Now I'm interested in how global education curriculum (particularly that produced by NGOs) gets taken up in classrooms, but also how groups of teachers and those in the formal education sector are working together to create new curricula with global perspectives.

  • Hi Nadya, I am a volunteer with Education Beyond Borders - an NGO made up of teachers who are working for empowerment and education equity in developing nations. I am a teacher in Quebec and oversee global classroom connections between classrooms here in North America and in Africa.
I may be able to help you with your study. Contact me at sharonpeters@gmail.com

    • Hi Sharon,

Thanks for your reply. I'm also a member of EBB, but I haven't been with it long. It's very encouraging to see these networking sites for global educators. I'm really excited about the possibilities for connecting up our work and information. Along with working on this study on Educating for Global Citizenship I'm also part of another budding network of global education educators (which includes teacher educators, teachers, and NGO global educators). We're planning a meeting in Montreal for the end of May - I'll let you and the wider group know more about that as soon as I get more details.
With regards to the study on educating for global citizenship, we're just setting up the Quebec site now. Would you mind if I passed your name on to another researcher in the group who will be working with participants in Quebec? Her name is Leigh-Anne Ingram.

Thanks again, looking forward to talking to you more.

      Cheers,

      Nadya
