Julie is a global collaboration consultant, teacherpreneur, innovator, leader and author. Now based back in Australia, she worked for over a decade as an education and digital technology leader in six different countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East. She understands different global contexts and is able to bring new opportunities to others through her unique approaches to digital learning and ‘teacherpreneur’ approach. Her passion is for online global collaboration and she leads online student projects for all K-12 levels. For educators she is adept at designing and customizing learning experiences including virtual courses and live events to support global understanding for learning and has presented keynotes in conferences around the world. Her first book, ‘Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds’ is acclaimed as the definitive text on how to embed global connections and collaborations for meaningful learning. Her new book, ‘The Global Educator’, published by ISTE in 2016, shares many stories and resources for taking learning global. Dear Julie,
With you amazing qualifications and experience, I've decided to direct my inquiry in your direction. I'm an EFL teacher at a GEPS primary school in Vienna. GEPS is an acronym for Global Education Primary School. Sadly, though, the school is far from global and that is my mission. I'm working on a global education handbook for the whole GEPS program and I want to include a section on international school partnerships/links. Recently a couple of progressive Austrian teachers at my school have asked me to organize, help them with finding a school to collaborate with. However, I'm embarrassed to say, the computers at our school desparately need an upgrade (we have no IT/Media Specialist) - at the moment our browers are slow that YouTube is not available! Anyway, my question for you. What basic tools/software/equipment would a school need in order to be able to collaborate with other schools globally? Each classroom has 2 computers.
Also, could you recommend a website/resource which offers definitions/a lexicon about the seemingly plethora of IT words/apps? Nobody in my school has a clue as to what most of these terms mean:
Web.2.0, Flatclassroom, widget, PLE, Google
Apps for Education, VoiceThread, NIng, wiki.......etc.
