Based on responses to the calendar doodle sent out a few weeks ago, people interested in helping with the GEC Summit at the International Society for Technology in Education Conference will meet at 1 PM CT (18:00:00 UTC) on Monday, June 11 in our video conferencing platform, Blackboard Collaborate. The link is below. Please use timeanddate.com if you need to convert the time for other time zones. 

Keep in mind that this summit will be a free event for those in the San Diego area on June 24 to attend in person. At this time, there are no plans for virtual participation (our signature conference in November is completely virtual).

I am facilitating: Global Dialog: International & Comparative Perspectives on Education (starting June 4, 2012). I welcome you all to join and/or share the course info with others. The course is free and open licensed. Emphasis will be on dialog and sharing between countries. Assignments will be light!

This 1-month virtual seminar (June 2012) is for educators, learners and parents who are keen to discuss and compare education systems from around the world. 

The course is divided into 4 modules each containing 2-3 online short videos (3-20 minutes each), optional reading, asynchronous discussions and an optional synchronous discussion (via Skype) around the following topics:

The purpose of the second National Symposium on Video Interpreting: Video Remote Interpreting is to explore current practice in video remote interpreting (VRI). This symposium will address where VRI is being done, and who's doing it. It will explore current practice, research, and implications for the field of interpreting by looking at applications in both signed language interpreting and spoken language interpreting.  

Format: Pre-recorded presentations, delivered via a NING portal, allowing participants to view the training from their individual computers. The presentations will then be opened for interactive discussion among members and presenters. Presenters will further facilitate the learning Audience: Interpreters (sign language), Deaf and Hearing consumers, interpreter educators, vocational rehabilitation personnel, providers of video interpreting, interpreting researchers, and other interested persons.

After the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, over a billion dollars in aid was promised to the struggling island. The world stepped up, empathized and donated. Yet much of the funds pledged to post-quake relief for has not been received for redevelopment and very little has been done to rebuild.

Haiti is the world's oldest black republic and one of the oldest republics in the Western Hemisphere, a cultural and historical gem. But why did it take over 5 decades for the US government to recognize the free black nation of Haiti? Why has the aid promised to Haiti by international aid agencies, not reached the Haitian public? GADLA- Digital Dialogs

Save Our Schools is an ongoing philanthropic initiative operated and managed by a local civic organization and a collaboration of community stakeholders for the purpose of providing emergency funds and resources to schools.

The fiscal challenge facing our nation is having a significant impact on North Carolina Schools. The impact we are experiencing in the marketplace has trickled down to a reduction in public services.

Our schools are now being forced to make dramatic changes in their budgets, which will result in deferred maintenance, a deficiency in teaching resources, and the loss of educators. In the end, we are hurting our children. While there are parents, individuals, and organizations who are working hard to support our schools, it is clear that there is a need for more.

The world has recently seen a nuclear disaster during the Tsunami in Japan, political Tsunamis in Middle East and Africa; and continuing racial & ethnic conflicts in Sri Lanka, east Asia and middle-east; terrorist and fundamentalist attacks in India, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan etc. and closer home the Maoist Violence. All this is largely an expression of intolerance, manifestations of racial and ethnic hatred, the perpetuation of violence for ulterior motives and the discrimination, inequality and growing disparities between the rich and the poor. If civilizations aren't tuned to the reality of human existence, they conserve the worst of human behavior and free themselves from any responsibility of creating a positive, peaceful co-existence amongst the diversity of beings. Cuba is a relatively poor, developing country with 2% of the Latin American population, that somehow manages to produce 11% of its scientists!

In 2005, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) released its Education For All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report, that specifically focuses on elevating the quality of education for all children, especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged, by the year 2015. Cuba, along with the more developed countries of Canada, Finland and Korea, is singled out in the report as a high-performance country and role model to follow in terms of the quality of its educational system. Cuba is the only Latin American country, and the only relatively poor country, to achieve this status.
