  • Hi,

Wanted to make sure that you received the info about our collaborative math project. Hope that it will be something your teachers will be interested in.

    Martha

    Mathlincs collaborative math project
Greetings all. I hope that this will be the perfect place for me to find teachers interested in participating in a collaborative math project. Please contact me at t56linc@gmail.com if you think that you might be interested. You could participate in each strand, or just choose one or two strands. If you are interested, I will give you access information to our moodle. Hope to hear from you.

Math Lincs is a collaborative project for 5th and 6th grade math students around the world. We will be sharing our math ideas in a variety of math projects which will be organized by strands. We will use a variety of technologies including blogging, videos, podcasting, GoogleEarth and video conferencing.

    Probability and Statistics:

    Activities:
You Be the Teacher:Each class will be given a list of Probability and Statistics vocabulary words. Classes then create a multimedia way to teach the words to others. Some examples would be creating "vocabucasts", (a podcast where each word is defined and used in a sentence.) a slide show, a video, post pictures, etc.

Graphing the World: Students compose a survey to share with the other classes. Survey results will be graphed and shared on our Wiki.

    Geometry:
    Activities:

Geometric Landmarks: Students will take photos or find photos of landmarks in their area. They then compose grade appropriate geometric challenges based on the object or photo. Students then mark their landmark on GoogleEarth using posting the photo and the challenge a KMZ file. Students then post how they would solve the problem. These files will be posted on the wiki to share with participating classes.

    Measurement:

    Activities:

The 100 Mile Diet: Students will use math and research to determine the impact our consumer food choices have on the environment and our local culture. Students will share local dishes, complete a database listing foods grown in their area and then take a trip to a grocery store to find out how for produce travels to reach the store. Students will pick 5 items to represent on a GoogleEarth map. Students will compare the value of foods grown locally vs. foods that travel great distances to get to their table.

    Algebraic Thinking:

    Activities:
Game Show Math: Each class will create a review game to be shared with the other classes. The games should be based on the 5 strands of math and should be grade level appropriate.
  • Hello Peter

I am planning on some kind of collaborative projects with other Kindergarten teachers and using Webkinz. I am sure you have heard of them, since they are (I believe) a Canadian company. Let's see if we can get something of the ground.
  • Hello!

I haven't visited here for a little while so sorry I haven't welcomed you before this. Glad to have you with us and hope to hear your perspective on using Web 2.0 with Primary kids.

Let me know if you'd like to collaborate on anything this year.
    Pete
